Fernand Tavano's Car Collection

Le Mans, Pays-de-la-Loire, France
About
The car collection of Fernand Tavano reflects his direct involvement in international motorsport during the 1950s and 1960s. Unlike many collectors, Tavano was also an accomplished racing driver, and the cars he owned were not merely displayed but actively raced. His collection notably included two Ferrari 250 GTOs (chassis 3769GT and 5095GT), both of which saw competition in events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Tour de France Automobile, and Coupe du Salon. These vehicles were often campaigned personally by Tavano and maintained to competitive standards, marking his collection as one grounded in performance and racing pedigree rather than passive preservation.
Bio
Fernand Tavano (1933-1984) was a French racing driver and garage owner who rose to prominence in the late 1950s and early 1960s through his participation in endurance racing and hill climbs. Born in France, he was originally a bricklayer by trade but turned to motorsport with dedication and mechanical intuition. Tavano earned respect in both national and international racing circuits, notably driving for his own account in Ferraris.
His racing career included entries in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Tour de France Automobile, and Coupe d’Automne, often in high-performance Ferraris acquired through direct purchase or private connections. His reputation grew through victories and consistent performance, such as a win in the Rallye de Picardie and multiple strong finishes in coupe events. Beyond racing, Tavano contributed to France’s postwar motorsport scene and maintained a workshop dedicated to preparing competition cars. He is remembered today as both a gentleman driver and one of France’s most active Ferrari privateers of the 1960s.
